The Exodus from Egypt is not only the foundational story of the Jewish people, but also a lasting source of inspiration for freedom fighters and oppressed peoples throughout history. Slave owners in the Caribbean, for example, removed the Exodus story from Bibles distributed to their slaves, while leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Benjamin Franklin found in it a language of hope and reinforcement for their visions of liberty. In a conversation beginning with the Hallel passages of the Haggadah and spanning across history, we will examine the tension between the two legacies of the Exodus story: the universal call for liberty and the national identity of the Jewish people.
