Jeremiah and Illustrations of Jewish Decline.
Jeremiah prophesied and reproached Israel through the reign of six kings. He witnessed both of Nebuchadnezzar’s disastrous sieges of Jerusalem. In this session, we look at Jeremiah’s prophecies, his life, and the treatment he received – including illustrations of his prophecies, some of which are based on medieval manuscript art and others on modern works.
Tisha B’Av is the most tragic day in the Jewish calendar. There are ten haftarot read during the weeks surrounding Tisha B’Av from the books of Jeremiah and Isaiah, chosen to address this significant day. In this series, we discuss the haftarah texts, the prophets’ lives and art of the haftarot.
