Under Shia Islam

In the 16th century, under the Safavid rule, Iran regained its borders and independence, while simultaneously adopting Shia Islam as the state religion. Shia Islam has specific laws concerning Jews and this shift had a profound impact on the relations between Jews and the Muslim environment.  We will explore the position of Jews in Iran during the Safavid and Qajar periods and present the story of the forced conversion of Jews in Mashhad as a case study.
