Discovering Jerusalem

Dr. Marik Shtern

Social History, Urbanism, and Geopolitics

Jerusalem is the cradle of the three monotheistic religions, a place that billions of believers around the world see as the mystical gate between earth and the heavens. Jerusalem is also one of the most contested, volatile and politicized spaces in the modern world. At the same time, Jerusalem is also a normal city, where just about a million residents live their daily lives, working, shopping and playing with their children. The city's landscape, its architecture and its urban development are the fruit of the tension between the holy and the quotidian.

In our new series, we try to discover Modern Jerusalem’s social history, urban development, and geopolitics.
