From Consolation to Theology

Sages set out to console their followers by claiming that a whole range of alternatives were capable of filling the void created by the destruction. Not the least of these was the claim that Torah-study, alongside other acts of piety unrelated to the Temple, might achieve the same results as sacrificial worship. Consequently, words intended originally as consolation ultimately evolved into independent theological doctrine.
