Angel of Covenant

Elijah was connected to the ritual of circumcision since late antiquity across most of the Jewish diaspora. We will focus our attention on the particular characteristics of Elijah’s presence in circumcision ceremonies in medieval Ashkenaz. Elijah’s figure was a prism for expressing and reinforcing foundational messages within the community.
