The Comedy of Childhood

With the story of “The Flag” (1900), Sholem Aleichem pioneered a literature for children of all ages. On the Jewish holidays, these stories demonstrated, every adult became a child again when the weekday routine turned into a carnival, a paper flag opened a wondrous Biblical landscape, and each festival became a mini-drama of shattered dreams and expectations.
