Parashat Shmot – Morality, Humanity and the Midwives

In the Parasha that opens the Book of Exodus we read about Pharaoh’s terrible decree to kill all male sons of the People of Israel. Despite Pharaoh’s orders, the midwives refuse. Who are these midwives? Israelites or Egyptians? What is the source of their strength to resist the powerful decree?
