Shabbat Bamidbar: The Generation of the Desert and the Judean Desert Sect

This Shabbat we read Parashat Bamidbar (In the Desert), which is the beginning of the fourth Chumash, describing the lives and journeys of the children of Israel in the Sinai desert. The desert is a physical place, but it also expresses a cultural vacuum in which one can walk and from which one can emerge into a new world.

In this encounter we will see the attitude towards the desert and the biblical generation of the desert, both positive and negative. We will also meet the Dead Sea Sect, which is a kind of reincarnation of the desert generation, those who chose to see the qualities of the desert and to live in it.
