The Torah describes the intergenerational transition between Jacob, his sons and members of his household. Jacob gathers his children and gives some of them blessings while criticizing others. This criticism is given in the hope of correcting their behavior or explaining why greatness was taken away from them, all in order to reach a conclusion about the qualities needed to be leaders.
