Parashat Beshalach – The Purpose of the Journey

The People of Israel leave Egypt but do not travel directly to the Land of Israel. Why does God send the Israelites to wander in the desert? Is there a meaning to this journey? Were the People of Israel preparing to enter the Promised Land?
