“The Haunted Tailor” (1901) is Sholem Aleichem’s most hilarious and baffling work. It is the story of a poor tailor whose wife sends him on an impossible mission to buy a milk-giving goat. But Shimen-Elye Shma Kolenu (Hear-Our-Voice) is trapped at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder; trapped in the body of a goat; trapped in a story without an end; and trapped by his own character. In the end, even Sholem Aleichem, the doctor of the soul, cannot rescue him from his tragicomic fate.
